Alterna Savings makes National Capital Region’s Top Employers list five years in a row

Ottawa – February 2, 2021 – For a fifth year, Alterna Savings and Credit Union Limited (Alterna) has made the National Capital Region’s Top Employers list. The announcement was made public on February 2, 2021, via a special publication in the Ottawa Citizen and on Eluta.ca – the official job search engine of the Canada's Top 100 Employers® project.

“I am honoured and humbled that Alterna has been counted among the best workplaces again, even while the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge us in different ways,” said, Rob Paterson, Alterna President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our employees are our greatest asset, and long before most organizations, we had a plan to protect them in the event of a pandemic. Because we were prepared, we were able to pivot and ensure that 100% of our office staff had the tools they needed to work from home. As an essential service, our branches remained open. For these front-line staff members, we provided personal protective equipment, plexiglass screens, greater cleaning and security measures before most other businesses.”

Alterna’s motto, “The Good in Banking,” is a commitment to acting with integrity, putting people before profits, and striving for excellence for the financial wellbeing of over 185,000 members across Ontario. It also means we are committed to investing in our employees and provide valuable opportunities for learning.

“Individuals are given learning paths specific to the role they are in or the role they are seeking. We provide flexible work arrangements, invest in furthering education, provide lunch and learns for our staff and create spaces (both virtual and in-person) that encourage innovation and collaboration,” explained Rob. “We also have a state-of-the-art learning management system that encourages microlearning. All content housed on our platform is available through an app that enables learning anywhere at any time. When an employee grows, we all grow.”

Investments in people have allowed Alterna to attract and retain top talent – people who also value Alterna’s commitment to community. We support our employees’ community work with paid volunteer days to give back to causes and organizations that are important to them.

Our employees make the difference. They make Alterna a great place to work, and bring to life the principals at the heart of who we are as a financial cooperative. Headquartered in Ottawa, with a corporate office in downtown Toronto, Alterna Savings has a network of 36 branches that span the breadth of Ontario.
