Community Financial Resiliency Program

Helps improve the capacity and resiliency of the nonprofit, charitable, co-operative, and affordable housing sectors to strengthen their financial sustainability.

Community Microfinance Program

Provides access to capital and affordable financial products and services for individuals, entrepreneurs, and organizations.

Community & Financial Inclusion Granting Programs

Strengthens the community sector by providing grant funding opportunities for registered charities, incorporated nonprofits, co-operatives without share capital, and unincorporated associations that positively impact communities.

Community Financial Education Program

Financial education programs and resources that are tailored to the specific needs of the individuals, organizations, and communities we serve.

Contributed over $4 million in support of the affordable housing sector*.

Community Impact Awards & Recognition

Outstanding Corporate Achievement Award

Alterna was thrilled to receive Ontario Credit Union Foundation’s 2024 Outstanding Corporate Achievement Award, granted based on our affordable housing commitment through our Community Financial Resiliency Program. This award is given annually to a credit union (or company within the co-operative financial system) to recognize their community contributions. 

Stronger Together Award

In 2023, Alterna Savings was honoured with the Canadian CED Network (CCEDNet)’s Stronger Together Award for our exceptional contributions to Community Economic Development and outstanding leadership. We were the first financial institution to receive this recognition in Canada.

Susan Henry

Director, Community Impact and Financial Inclusion

Susan Henry brings over 25 years of expertise working alongside underserved and underrepresented individuals and communities. Guided by a deep commitment to financial inclusion for all, Susan’s leadership has been pivotal in launching Alterna Savings’ award-winning Community Microfinance Program and the innovative Community Loan Funds Partnership Programs. In her role guiding Alterna’s Community Impact Department, Susan works collaboratively with our team and community partners to set the strategic direction and provide oversight for a portfolio that includes affordable housing initiatives, nonprofit and charitable sector engagement, the Community Microfinance Program, Community Financial Education, and Granting Programs.

Fahima Karim has built her career within the co-operative banking sector, guided by a strong commitment to financial inclusion and community-driven finance. In her role as Account Manager, Nonprofit & Affordable Housing, Fahima supports a large and diverse portfolio of community-based organizations including nonprofit, charitable, and affordable housing providers across Ontario.

Jean Barrett brings over 25+ years of banking experience in the Retail and Commercial sectors. As the Manager of Alterna Savings’ award-winning Community Microfinance Program, she oversees eight community microloan portfolios and manages 250+ small business borrowers in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa Region annually.
